Change creates uncertainty.
Uncertainty creates stress.
Stress changes how people think, feel and behave.
And those behaviors are contagious.
People become more controlling, more anxious, more avoidant, more critical, or overly focused on analysis.
Those reactions create resistance long before anyone objects to the strategy itself. And when momentum slows, and people conclude:
“See? The change isn’t working.”
But resistance is rarely the root problem.
Fear is.
The best change leaders understand that their job is not simply to communicate the plan. Their job is to create conditions where people can move through uncertainty.
A few things that help:
❤️ Create a compelling “why” that people can feel, not just understand.
🏆 Celebrate small wins. Momentum creates belief.
👥 Recognize that people adopt change at different speeds.
🌱 Replace judgment with curiosity.
🔍 Look for defensive behaviors before they become part of the culture.
When people feel inspired rather than threatened, energy replaces resistance.
